It's no secret that people are going through some harsh times right in the middle of a recession but now that the recession is easing, are the prices decreasing? The government seems to think so.
In fact the government has said that consumers are paying less today than they were a year ago. We turn to the Consumer Price Index to find out if that's true. The CPI is down 1.3 percent from a year ago which tells is that the marketing world is looking better. This CPI is calculated in by the Labor Department Bureau of Labor Statistics better known as the BLS. Several things are calculated to provide the BLS with knowledge to how the CPI will look. Two of things are fuel and health care.
Fuel has gone down by 30 percent in the past months bringing the CPI up by 1.2 percent. Even though gas prices are increasingly going down, in the past 6 months overall they have gone up by 29 percent which explains to the average consumer why they always seem to be so high. Health care has gone up by 4.2 percent since 2008 which has been noted by BLS. It has also been noted that consumers are spending 7 percent on health insurance since last year.
Surveys that have been taken by the Kaiser Family Foundation show that there has been an increase in co-payments, deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses which were not captured in the BLS computations or the CPI results.
There are some tax brackets and deductions that are being acknowledged by CPI that are showing that in 2010 many people will have higher tax bills. With all the up's and downs of the recession, layoffs and the ever-growing wonder of how much our daily expenses are going to cost we all need something stable in our lives to depend on. We could all use a trade in something that is exciting but not only exciting financially stable also.
